Oceania Cruises is an excellent choice for travelers who appreciate exceptional dining, attentive service, smaller ships, and itineraries that emphasize the destinations rather than the onboard attractions. It is particularly appealing to experienced premium cruisers looking for a more refined, relaxed, and personalized experience.
But Oceania isn't for everyone. Here's how to decide whether it's the right fit for your next voyage.
Consider Oceania If...
You love exceptional food. Dining is a highlight, with outstanding specialty restaurants, elegant main dining rooms, and memorable culinary experiences.
You prefer smaller, more intimate ships. Enjoy an upscale atmosphere without the crowds and complexity of today's mega-ships.

Concierge Veranda Stateroom
I sailed aboard Oceania Riviera in July 2026 on the Voyage of the Glaciers in Alaska. This was our third Alaska cruise, and Oceania delivered a distinctly different and memorable experience.
We stayed in a Concierge Veranda Stateroom, which impressed me with its spacious layout, luxurious finishes, generous bathroom, and thoughtful amenities. Access to a dedicated Concierge and the Concierge Lounge added another level of personalized service.
Dining was exceptional. We enjoyed all four specialty restaurants, especially Jacques, the signature French restaurant inspired by Jacques Pépin. The Grand Dining Room was equally impressive, with outstanding food and remarkably attentive service.
What made this voyage particularly special was Riviera's smaller size. We visited less-traveled Alaska ports, including Haines, Hoonah/Icy Strait Point, and Klawock, often sharing these destinations with few other cruise ships. The atmosphere onboard was sophisticated yet relaxed, with just the right balance of entertainment, amenities, and quiet spaces.
Having experienced Alaska on larger ships, I particularly appreciated Oceania's combination of intimate cruising, exceptional dining, personal service, and distinctive destinations. It's an experience I would enthusiastically recommend to travelers looking for something beyond traditional premium cruising.
Life Aboard Oceania Cruises
Life aboard Oceania is sophisticated yet wonderfully relaxed. With smaller ships, thoughtfully designed public spaces, and an emphasis on personal service, the experience feels more like an intimate luxury resort than a traditional large cruise ship. The focus is on enjoying the journey, exploring fascinating destinations, and appreciating the finer details without unnecessary formality.
Atmosphere
Oceania offers an elegant, adult-oriented environment that feels comfortable rather than stuffy. Beautiful lounges, inviting pool decks, and quiet spaces provide plenty of opportunities to relax. The atmosphere is generally peaceful and unhurried, attracting well-traveled guests who appreciate good food, interesting conversations, and enriching destinations.
Service
Personalized service is one of Oceania's strengths. With fewer guests than larger cruise ships, the crew can provide attentive, thoughtful hospitality. During my Riviera sailing, I particularly appreciated the genuine warmth of the staff, the excellent restaurant service, and the extra attention available through our Concierge-level accommodations.
Entertainment & Amenities
Evenings aboard Oceania are relaxed, with live music, theatrical performances, intimate lounges, and opportunities to socialize. Ships also offer a spa, fitness center, pool, and a small casino. While you won't find the elaborate attractions or high-energy nightlife of larger ships, there's plenty to enjoy between ports and after dinner.
Dining on Oceania Cruises: A Culinary Experience at Sea
Dining is one of the defining features of an Oceania cruise. Known for its signature philosophy, The Finest Cuisine at Sea®, Oceania places exceptional emphasis on fresh ingredients, carefully prepared dishes, elegant presentation, and attentive service.
Unlike many premium cruise lines, Oceania includes dining at its specialty restaurants in the cruise fare, with reservations subject to availability. Guests can enjoy a variety of culinary experiences without paying an additional specialty restaurant cover charge.
Depending on the ship, dining venues may include Toscana, serving authentic Italian cuisine; Polo Grill, a classic American steakhouse; Red Ginger, featuring contemporary Asian-inspired dishes; and Jacques, a French restaurant inspired by celebrated chef Jacques Pépin. The Grand Dining Room offers an elegant, changing menu, while Terrace Café provides a more casual dining experience with an impressive selection of freshly prepared dishes.
Afternoon tea is another Oceania tradition, featuring an assortment of teas, pastries, and finger sandwiches served in a relaxed setting, often accompanied by live music.

My Personal Dining Experience
During our Alaska voyage aboard Oceania Riviera, dining was consistently one of the highlights of the cruise. We enjoyed all four specialty restaurants, each offering its own atmosphere and culinary style.
Toscana was a particular favorite. Located high on the ship with expansive ocean views, it offered outstanding Italian cuisine, thoughtful service, and a memorable olive oil presentation. Jacques was another standout, with beautifully prepared French dishes in an intimate, sophisticated setting.
We also thoroughly enjoyed the Grand Dining Room, where the quality of the food and personalized service impressed us throughout the voyage. The daily afternoon tea became a favorite ritual, with traditional tea service, an excellent selection of teas, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.
Even Terrace Café, Oceania's more casual buffet-style venue, offered an impressive selection and quality of food, although we generally preferred the full-service restaurants.
For travelers considering an upgrade from premium cruising, Oceania's culinary program is one of its strongest attractions. If exceptional dining, variety, and attentive restaurant service are important parts of your vacation, Oceania deserves serious consideration.
Staterooms & Suites: Comfortable, Refined Living at Sea
Oceania Cruises offers thoughtfully designed staterooms and suites that emphasize comfort, elegant surroundings, and a welcoming residential atmosphere. From well-appointed veranda accommodations to expansive luxury suites, the emphasis is on quality furnishings, comfortable beds, attractive bathrooms, and a relaxing personal retreat after a day exploring ashore.
Accommodations vary by ship, with options that may include Inside and Oceanview Staterooms, Veranda Staterooms, Concierge Level Veranda Staterooms, Penthouse Suites, and larger premium suites. Newer ships, such as Oceania Vista and Allura, feature all-veranda accommodations and updated residential-style designs.
Choosing the Right Accommodation
For travelers accustomed to booking balcony staterooms or mini-suites on premium cruise lines, Oceania's Veranda and Concierge Level accommodations are excellent places to begin comparing options.
Veranda Staterooms provide a private outdoor space, comfortable seating, elegant finishes, and the amenities expected of an upscale cruise experience.
Concierge Level Veranda Staterooms build on the standard veranda experience with additional privileges, which may include access to a dedicated Concierge Lounge on select ships, priority services, and other amenities that vary by ship and sailing.
Penthouse Suites offer additional living space, enhanced amenities, and butler service, making them attractive to travelers who appreciate more personalized attention and room to relax.
Premium Suites, including Oceania, Vista, and Owner's Suites on ships where offered, provide more expansive living areas, upgraded furnishings, and additional services and privileges.
The differences between categories can be significant, so it's worth comparing the actual stateroom layout, bathroom configuration, included privileges, and price before making a decision.
My Personal Experience Aboard Oceania Riviera
During our Alaska voyage aboard Oceania Riviera, we stayed in a Concierge Level Veranda Stateroom, and it was an excellent choice.
We particularly appreciated the refined finishes, comfortable accommodations, and surprisingly spacious bathroom. The stateroom felt thoughtfully designed, with plenty of attention to the details that make a difference during a longer voyage.
The Concierge Level privileges were another welcome benefit. Access to the dedicated Concierge Lounge provided a convenient, quieter space to enjoy refreshments and receive assistance when needed.
For travelers considering an upgrade from premium cruising, I believe Oceania's Concierge Level accommodations offer an appealing balance of comfort, amenities, and value. Moving into a larger suite can certainly enhance the experience, but you don't necessarily need to book one of the ship's

Complimentary Wi-Fi
Stay connected with included Wi-Fi access throughout the ship, subject to onboard service capabilities and applicable usage conditions.
Shipboard Gratuities
Standard gratuities for your stateroom attendants, dining staff, and other covered crew members are included, removing an expense that travelers often pay separately on premium cruise lines.
Laundry Services
Complimentary self-service laundry facilities are available, with additional laundry and pressing services included for eligible Concierge Level and Suite accommodations.
Entertainment, Fitness, and Enrichment
Enjoy live music, evening performances, destination lectures, fitness facilities, and a variety of onboard activities without additional charges for standard programming.
Your World Included: Choose the Benefit That Fits Your Travel Style
In addition to its standard inclusions, Oceania offers guests a choice of one of two valuable benefits through its enhanced Your World Included program.
Option 1: Complimentary Wine and Beer
Enjoy a selection of wines by the glass and beers during operating lunch and dinner hours.
This option may appeal to travelers who appreciate wine with dinner, a refreshing beer with lunch, or the convenience of enjoying selected alcoholic beverages without purchasing a separate beverage package.
The benefit applies to eligible selections during designated dining hours rather than unlimited alcoholic beverages throughout the entire day.
Option 2: Shore Excursion Credit
Prefer to focus your vacation spending on exploring destinations? Choose a shore excursion credit that can be applied toward eligible Oceania shore experiences.
The amount varies based on the voyage and is generally provided per stateroom, subject to booking conditions.
This option may be especially attractive to destination-focused travelers who want to explore local culture, history, cuisine, and attractions during their cruise.
For example, an eligible 10-night itinerary might offer a $600 shore excursion credit per stateroom, while longer voyages may provide a larger amount.
Which Option Should You Choose?
The best choice depends on how you plan to spend your time onboard and ashore.
If you enjoy wine or beer regularly with lunch and dinner, the beverage option may provide greater personal value.
If you're primarily interested in exploring destinations, the shore excursion credit may be more useful.
I recommend considering the itinerary, number of port days, available excursions, and your typical onboard beverage preferences before selecting your benefit.
Guests sharing a stateroom generally must select the same option, and the choice must be finalized by the applicable booking deadline.
What's Not Included?
Although Oceania provides an extensive collection of included amenities, it is important to understand that it is not completely all-inclusive.
Depending on your selected Your World Included benefit and booking arrangements, additional expenses may include:
Cocktails, spirits, premium beverages, and alcoholic drinks outside the included wine-and-beer benefit
Shore excursions beyond any applicable credit
Spa treatments and certain specialized wellness services
Selected culinary classes and other specialty activities
Casino gaming and personal purchases
Airfare, transfers, and pre- or post-cruise accommodations unless specifically included in your booking
Understanding the Real Value of Oceania
When comparing Oceania with premium cruise lines, I encourage travelers to consider the total cost of their vacation rather than focusing exclusively on the advertised cruise fare.
A premium cruise may initially appear less expensive, but specialty dining, beverage packages, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and other purchases can increase the final cost.
Oceania includes many of these amenities in its standard fare and adds flexibility through its Your World Included choice.
For some travelers, the difference in total vacation cost may be smaller than expected. For others, the additional investment reflects the value of a smaller ship, exceptional cuisine, attentive service, and a more relaxed onboard experience.
